Getting in there early with the seasonal scarys with this Hydnellum peckii - Bleeding tooth fungus 🎃 👻 This was high on my list to find due to its blood like droplets of guttation. Guttation can often be found on mushrooms, especially in optimum conditions during periods of rapid growth. Some people liken it to ‘mushroom sweat’ this particular fungus is known for having the coolest / creepiest in existence. 🩸 Found on a trip to Scotland a couple of years ago. #throwbackthursdays #allthingsfun

As is often requested, I tried licking a Bleeding Tooth fungus (Hydnellum peckii). The bloody looking droplets are guttation or mushroom sweat. The red color comes from polyphenols and taninins in the droplets of metabolite. Despite its somewhat daunting and delicious appearance this is an inedible mushroom, because it is very bitter and the texture is very tough. Here I demonstrate that first hand.
